Incomputing,especiallydigitalsignalprocessing,multiply-accumulateisacommonoperationthatcomputestheproductof

twonumbersandaddsthatproducttoanaccumulator.

Whendonewithfloatingpointnumbersitmightbeperformedwithtworoundings(typicalinmanyDSPs)orwithasingle

rformedwithasinglerounding,itiscalledafudmultiply-add(FMA)orfudmultiply-accumulate

(FMAC).

Moderncomputersmaycontainadedicatedmultiply-accumulateunit,orMACunit,consistingofamultiplierimplementedin

combinationallogicfollowedbputof

theregisterisfedbacktooneinputoftheadder,sothatoneachclocktheoutputofthemultiplierisaddedtotheregister.

Combinationalmultipliersrequirealargeamountoflogic,butcancomputeaproductmuchmorequicklythanthemethodof

stprocessorstobeequippedwithMAC-unitsweredigitalsignal

processors,butthetechniqueisnowalsocommoningeneral-purpoprocessors.
