Sothat’swhatwemeanwhenwesayAmericaixceptional.

Notthatournationhasbeenflawlessfromthestart,butthat

wehaveshownthecapacitytochange,andmakelifebetterfor

thowhofollow.

Yes,kofdemocracy

hasalwaysbeenhard,

everytwostepsforward,itoftenfeelswetakeonestepback.

ButthelongsweepofAmericahasbeendefinedbyforwardmotion,

aconstantwideningofourfoundingcreedtoembraceall,and

notjustsome.

IfIhadtoldyoueightyearsagothatAmericawouldrever

agreatrecession,rebootourautoindustry,andunleashthe

longeststretchofjobcreationinourhistory…ifIhadtold

youthatwewouldopenupanewchapterwiththeCubanpeople,

shutdownIran’snuclearweaponsprogramwithoutfiringashot,

andtakeoutthemastermindof9/11…ifIhadtoldyouthatwe

wouldwinmarriageequality,andcuretherighttohealth

insuranceforanother20millionofourfellowcitizens-you

mighthavesaidoursightsweretalittletoohigh.

Butthat’’ethe

weredpeople’shopes,andbecauofyou,by

almosteverymeasure,Americaisabetter,strongerplacethan

democracy:thepeacefultransferofpowerfromone

President-ElectTrumpthatmyadministrationwouldensurethe

smoothestpossibletransition,justasPresidentBushdidfor

canhelpusmeetthemanychallengeswestillface.

wealthiest,mostpowerful,andmostrespectednationonEarth.

Ouryouthanddrive,ourdiversityandopenness,ourboundless

capacityforriskandreinventionmeanthatthefutureshould

Butthatpotentialwillberealizedonlyifourdemocracy

allofus,regardlessofourpartyaffiliation

orparticularinterest,helprestorethenofcommon

Understand,

foundersquarreledandcompromid,andexpectedustodothe

ofsolidarity-theideathatforallouroutwarddifferences,

weareallinthistogether;thatweriorfallasone.

Therehavebeenmomentsthroughoutourhistorythat

inningofthis

kingworld,growing

inequality;demographicchangeandthespecterofterrorism-

theforceshaven’tjusttestedourcurityandprosperity,

wemeetthechallengesto

ourdemocracywilldetermineourabilitytoeducateourkids,

andcreategoodjobs,andprotectourhomeland.

Inotherwords,itwilldetermineourfuture.

Ourdemocracywon’tworkwithoutanthateveryonehas

wages,incomes,homevalues,andretirementaccountsarerising

Butforalltherealprogresswe’vemade,weknowit’s

nomydoesn’tworkaswellorgrowasfast

whenafewprosperattheexpenofagrowingmiddleclass.

Butstarkinequalityisalsocorrosivetoourdemocratic

hetoponepercenthasamasdabiggershare

ofwealthandincome,toomanyfamilies,ininnercitiesand

ruralcounties,havebeenleftbehind-thelaid-offfactory

worker;thewaitressandhealthcareworkerwhostruggletopay

thebills-convincedthatthegameisfixedagainstthem,that

theirgovernmentonlyrvestheinterestsofthepowerful-

arecipeformorecynicismandpolarizationinourpolitics.

attitudesofyoungAmericansacrossthepoliticalspectrum.

betweenahardworkingwhitemiddleclassandunderving

minorities,thenworkersofallshadeswillbeleftfighting

forscrapswhilethewealthywithdrawfurtherintotheir

clinetoinvestinthechildrenof

theprospectsofourownchildren-becauthobrownkids

willreprentalargershareofAmerica’

economydoesn’ar,incomes

roforallraces,allagegroups,formenandforwomen.

Goingforward,wemustupholdlawsagainstdiscrimination

-inhiring,inhousing,ineducationandthecriminaljustice

’swhatourConstitutionandhighestidealsrequire.

Butlawsalonewon’

democracyistoworkinthisincreasinglydivernation,each

oneofusmusttrytoheedtheadviceofoneofthegreat

charactersinAmericanfiction,AtticusFinch,whosaid“You

neverreallyunderstandapersonuntilyouconsiderthingsfrom

hispointofview…untilyouclimbintohisskinandwalkaround

init.”

Forblacksandotherminorities,itmeanstyingourown

strugglesforjusticetothechallengesthatalotofpeople

inthiscountryface-therefugee,theimmigrant,therural

poor,thetransgenderAmerican,andalsothemiddle-agedwhite

manwhofromtheoutsidemayemlikehe’sgotallthe

advantages,butwho’senhisworldupendedbyeconomic,

cultural,andtechnologicalchange.

ForwhiteAmericans,itmeansacknowledgingthatthe

effectsofslaveryandJimCrowdidn’tsuddenlyvanishinthe

‘60s;thatwhenminoritygroupsvoicediscontent,they’renot

justengaginginreverracismorpracticingpolitical

correctness;thatwhentheywagepeacefulprotest,they’renot

demandingspecialtreatment,buttheequaltreatmentour

Fornative-bornAmericans,itmeansremindingourlves

thatthestereotypesaboutimmigrantstodayweresaid,almost

wordforword,abouttheIrish,Italians,a

wasn’tweakenedbytheprenceofthenewcomers;they

embracedthisnation’screed,anditwasstrengthened.

Soregardlessofthestationweoccupy;wehavetotry

harder;tostartwiththepremithateachofourfellow

thatfitsouropinions,insteadofbasingouropinionsonthe

evidencethat’soutthere.

Thistrendreprentsathirdthreattoourdemocracy.

Politicsisabattleofideas;inthecourofahealthydebate,

we’llprioritizedifferentgoals,andthedifferentmeansof

houtsomecommonbalineoffacts;

withoutawillingnesstoadmitnewinformation,andconcede

thatyouropponentismakingafairpoint,andthatscienceand

reasonmatter,we’llkeeptalkingpasteachother,making

commongroundandcompromiimpossible.

Isn’tthatpartofwhatmakespoliticssodispiriting?How

canelectedofficialsrageaboutdeficitswhenwepropoto

spendmoneyonpreschoolforkids,butnotwhenwe’recutting

taxesforcorporations?Howdoweexcuethicallapsinour

ownparty,butpouncewhentheotherpartydoesthesamething?

It’snotjustdishonest,thislectivesortingofthefacts;

it’easmymotherudtotellme,

realityhasawayofcatchingupwithyou.

we’vehalvedourdependenceonforeignoil,doubledour

renewableenergy,andledtheworldtoanagreementthathas

houtbolderaction,our

childrenwon’thavetimetodebatetheexistenceofclimate

change;they’llbebusydealingwithitffects:environmental

disasters,economicdisruptions,andwavesofclimaterefugees

ekingsanctuary.

Now,wecanandshouldargueaboutthebestapproachtothe

implydenytheproblemnotonlybetraysfuture

generations;itbetraystheesntialspiritofinnovationand

practicalproblem-solvingthatguidedourFounders.

It’sthatspirit,bornoftheEnlightenment,thatmadeus

aneconomicpowerhou-thespiritthattookflightatKitty

HawkandCapeCanaveral;thespiritthatthatcuresdiaand

putacomputerineverypocket.

It’sthatspirit-afaithinreason,andenterpri,and

theprimacyofrightovermight,thatallowedustoresistthe

lureoffascismandtyrannyduringtheGreatDepression,and

buildapost-WorldWarIIorderwithotherdemocracies,anorder

badnotjustonmilitarypowerornationalaffiliationsbut

onprinciples-theruleoflaw,humanrights,freedomsof

religion,speech,asmbly,andanindependentpress.

Thatorderisnowbeingchallenged-firstbyviolent

fanaticswhoclaimtospeakforIslam;morerecentlyby

autocratsinforeigncapitalswhoefreemarkets,open

democracies,andcivilsocietyitlfasathreattotheirpower.

Theperileachpostoourdemocracyismorefar-reachingthan

entsthefearofchange;the

fearofpeoplewholookorspeakorpraydifferently;acontempt

fortheruleoflawthatholdsleadersaccountable;an

intoleranceofdisntandfreethought;abeliefthatthesword

orthegunorthebomborpropagandamachineistheultimate

arbiterofwhat’strueandwhat’sright.

Becauoftheextraordinarycourageofourmenandwomen

inuniform,andtheintelligenceofficers,lawenforcement,and

diplomatswhosupportthem,noforeignterroristorganization

hassuccessfullyplannedandexecutedanattackonourhomeland

thepasteightyears;andalthoughBostonandOrlandoremind

usofhowdangerousradicalizationcanbe,ourlawenforcement

’vetaken

outtensofthousandsofterrorists-includingOsamabinLaden.

Theglobalcoalitionwe’releadingagainstISILhastakenout

willbedestroyed,andnoonewhothreatensAmericawillever

Butprotectingourwayofliferequiresmorethanour
