Notthatournationhasbeenflawlessfromthestart,butthat
wehaveshownthecapacitytochange,andmakelifebetterfor
thowhofollow.
Yes,kofdemocracy
hasalwaysbeenhard,
everytwostepsforward,itoftenfeelswetakeonestepback.
ButthelongsweepofAmericahasbeendefinedbyforwardmotion,
aconstantwideningofourfoundingcreedtoembraceall,and
notjustsome.
IfIhadtoldyoueightyearsagothatAmericawouldrever
agreatrecession,rebootourautoindustry,andunleashthe
longeststretchofjobcreationinourhistory…ifIhadtold
youthatwewouldopenupanewchapterwiththeCubanpeople,
shutdownIran’snuclearweaponsprogramwithoutfiringashot,
andtakeoutthemastermindof9/11…ifIhadtoldyouthatwe
wouldwinmarriageequality,andcuretherighttohealth
insuranceforanother20millionofourfellowcitizens-you
mighthavesaidoursightsweretalittletoohigh.

canhelpusmeetthemanychallengeswestillface.

theforceshaven’tjusttestedourcurityandprosperity,
wemeetthechallengesto
ourdemocracywilldetermineourabilitytoeducateourkids,
andcreategoodjobs,andprotectourhomeland.

Ourdemocracywon’tworkwithoutanthateveryonehas

Butforalltherealprogresswe’vemade,weknowit’s
nomydoesn’tworkaswellorgrowasfast
whenafewprosperattheexpenofagrowingmiddleclass.
Butstarkinequalityisalsocorrosivetoourdemocratic
hetoponepercenthasamasdabiggershare
ofwealthandincome,toomanyfamilies,ininnercitiesand
ruralcounties,havebeenleftbehind-thelaid-offfactory
worker;thewaitressandhealthcareworkerwhostruggletopay
thebills-convincedthatthegameisfixedagainstthem,that
theirgovernmentonlyrvestheinterestsofthepowerful-
arecipeformorecynicismandpolarizationinourpolitics.

Goingforward,wemustupholdlawsagainstdiscrimination
-inhiring,inhousing,ineducationandthecriminaljustice
’swhatourConstitutionandhighestidealsrequire.
Butlawsalonewon’
democracyistoworkinthisincreasinglydivernation,each
oneofusmusttrytoheedtheadviceofoneofthegreat
charactersinAmericanfiction,AtticusFinch,whosaid“You
neverreallyunderstandapersonuntilyouconsiderthingsfrom
hispointofview…untilyouclimbintohisskinandwalkaround
init.”
Forblacksandotherminorities,itmeanstyingourown
strugglesforjusticetothechallengesthatalotofpeople
inthiscountryface-therefugee,theimmigrant,therural
poor,thetransgenderAmerican,andalsothemiddle-agedwhite
manwhofromtheoutsidemayemlikehe’sgotallthe
advantages,butwho’senhisworldupendedbyeconomic,
cultural,andtechnologicalchange.

ForwhiteAmericans,itmeansacknowledgingthatthe
effectsofslaveryandJimCrowdidn’tsuddenlyvanishinthe
‘60s;thatwhenminoritygroupsvoicediscontent,they’renot
justengaginginreverracismorpracticingpolitical
correctness;thatwhentheywagepeacefulprotest,they’renot
demandingspecialtreatment,buttheequaltreatmentour

Fornative-bornAmericans,itmeansremindingourlves
thatthestereotypesaboutimmigrantstodayweresaid,almost
wordforword,abouttheIrish,Italians,a

Politicsisabattleofideas;inthecourofahealthydebate,

houtsomecommonbalineoffacts;
withoutawillingnesstoadmitnewinformation,andconcede
thatyouropponentismakingafairpoint,andthatscienceand
reasonmatter,we’llkeeptalkingpasteachother,making

Thatorderisnowbeingchallenged-firstbyviolent
fanaticswhoclaimtospeakforIslam;morerecentlyby
autocratsinforeigncapitalswhoefreemarkets,open
democracies,andcivilsocietyitlfasathreattotheirpower.
Theperileachpostoourdemocracyismorefar-reachingthan
entsthefearofchange;the
fearofpeoplewholookorspeakorpraydifferently;acontempt
fortheruleoflawthatholdsleadersaccountable;an
intoleranceofdisntandfreethought;abeliefthatthesword
orthegunorthebomborpropagandamachineistheultimate
arbiterofwhat’strueandwhat’sright.
Becauoftheextraordinarycourageofourmenandwomen
inuniform,andtheintelligenceofficers,lawenforcement,and
diplomatswhosupportthem,noforeignterroristorganization
hassuccessfullyplannedandexecutedanattackonourhomeland
