Three passions, simple but overwhelmingly strong, have governed my life: the longing for love, the arch for knowledge, and unbearable pity for the suffering of mankind. The passions, like great winds, have blown me hither and thither(到处) , in a wayward(任性的,不规则的) cour, ove r a deep ocean of anguish, reaching to the very verge of despair.
I have sought love, first, becau it brings ecstasy(狂喜,入迷) –ecstasy so great that I would often have sacrificed all the rest of life for a few hours of this joy. I have sought it, next, becau it relieves loneliness--that terrible loneliness in which one shivering consciousness looks over the rim of the world into the cold unfathomable(深不可测的) lifeless abyss. I have sought it, finally, becau in the union of love I have en, in a mystic miniature, the prefiguring vision of the heaven that saints and poets have imagined. This is what I sought, and though it might em too good for human life, this is what- at last- I have found.
With equal passion I have sought knowledge. I have wished to understand the hearts of men. I have tried to apprehend(理解) the Pythagorean power by which number holds sway above the flu. A little of this, but not much, I have achieved.
Love and knowledge, so far as they were possible, led upward toward the heavens. But always pity brought me back to earth. Echoes of cries of pain reverberate(回想,反响) in my heart. Children in famine, victims tortured by oppressors, helpless old people a hated burden to their sons, and the whole world of loneliness, poverty, and pain make a mockery of what human life should be. I long to alleviate the evil, but I cannot, and I too suffer.
This has been my life. I have found it worth living, and would gladly live it again if the chance were offered me.
Jerry was the kind of guy you love to hate. He was always in a good mood and always had something positive to say. When someone would ask him how he was doing, he would reply, "If I were any better, I would be twins!"
He was a unique manager becau he had veral waiters who had followed him around from restaurant to restaurant. The reason the waiters followed Jerry was becau of his attitude. He was a natural motivator. If an employee was having a bad day, Jerry was there telling the employee how to look on the positive side of the situation.
Seeing this style really made me curious, so one day I went up to Jerry and asked him, "I don't get it! You can't be a positive person all of the time. How do you do it?"
Jerry replied, "Each morning I wake up and say to mylf, "Jerry, you have two choices today. You can choo to be in a good mood or you can choo to be in a bad mood." I choo to be in a good mood. Each time something bad happens, I can choo to be a victim or I can choo to learn from it. I choo to learn from it. Every time someone comes to me complaining, I can choo to accept their complaining or I can point out the positive side of life. I choo the positive side of life."
"Yeah, right, it's not that easy," I protested."Yes, it is," Jerry said. "Life is all about choices. When you cut away all the junk, every situation is a choice. You choo how you react to situations. You choo how people will affect your mood. You choo to be in a good mood or bad mood. The bottom line: It's your choice how you live life."
I reflected on(仔细考虑) what Jerry said. Soon thereafter, I left the restaurant industry to start my own business. We lost touch, but I often thought about him when I made a choice about life instead of reacting to it.
Several years later, I heard that Jerry did something you are never suppod to do in a restaurant business: he left the back door open one morning and was held up at gunpoint by three armed robbers. While trying to open the safe his hand, shaking from nervousness, slipped off the combination. The robbers panicked and shot him.
Luckily, Jerry was found relatively quickly and rushed to the local trauma(创伤) center. After 18 hours of surgery and weeks of intensive care, Jerry was relead from the hospital with fragments of the bullets still in his body.
I saw Jerry about six months after the accident. When I asked him how he was, he replied, "If I were any better, I"d be twins. Wanna e my scars?" I declined to e his wounds, but did ask him what had gone through his mind as the robbery took place.
"The first thing that went through my mind was that I should have locked the back door," Jerry replied. "Then, as I lay on the floor, I remembered that I had two choices: I could choo to live, or I could choo to die. I cho to live."
"Weren't you scared? Did you lo consciousness(知觉) ?" I asked.Jerry continued, "The paramedics(护理人员) were great. They kept telling me I was going to be fine. But when they wheeled me into the emergency room and I saw the expressions on the faces of the doctors and nurs, I got really scared. In their eyes, I read, "He's a dead man." "I knew I needed to take action."
"What did you do?" I asked."Well, there was a big, burly nur shouting questions at me," said Jerry."She asked if I was allergic to anything. "Yes," I replied. The doctors and nurs stopped working as they waited for my reply. I took a deep breath and yelled, "Bullets!"
Over their laughter, I told them. "I am choosing to live. Operate on me as if I am alive, not dead."Jerry lived thanks to the skill of his doctors, but also becau of his amazing attitude. I learned from him that every day we have the choice to live fully.Attitude, after all, is everything.
A couple,John and Mary, had two lovely children.John had just been asked to go on a business trip and would be gone for veral days.Mary would go along too. They hired a reliable woman to care for children and made the trip, returning home a little earlier than they had planned.
As they drove into their home town feeling glad to be back, they noticed smoke, and they went off their usual route to e what it was. They found a home in flames.Mary said,”Oh,well, it isn’t our fire, let’s go home.”
But John drove clor and exclaimed, “That home belongs to Fred Jones who works at the plant. He wouldn’t be off work yet, maybe there is something we could do. ” “It has nothing to do with us, ”protested Mary.
But John drove up and stopped and they were both horror stricken to e the whole hou in flames.A woman on the lawn was in hysterics screaming, “The children!Get the children! ”John grabbed her by the shoulder saying, “Get a hold of yourlf and tell us where the children are! ”“In the bament, ”sobbed the woman,”down the hall and to the left. ”
In spite of Mary’s protests John bolted for the bament which was full of smoke and scorching hot.He found the door and two children. As he left he could hear some more whimpering. He delivered the two badly frightened and nearly suffocated children into waiting arms and started back asking how many more children were down there. They told him two more and Mary grabbed his arm and screamed, “John!Don’t go back! It’!That hou will cave in any cond. ”
But he ran into the smoke filed hallway and into the room.At last he found both children. As he stumbled up the endless steps, the thought went through his mind that there was something strangely familiar about the little bodies clinging to him,and at last when they came out into the sunlight and fresh air,he found that he had just rescued his own children.
The baby-sitter had left them at this home while she did some shopping.
