Appointment with love
Six minutes to six, said the clock over the information booth in New York’s Grand Central Station. The tall young Army lieutenant lifted his sunburned face and narrowed his eyes to note the exact time. His heart was pounding with a beat. In six minutes he would e the woman who had filled such a special place in his life for the past 13 month, the woman he had never en, yet who written words had sustained him unfailingly.
Lieutenant Blandford remembered one day in particular, during the worst of the fighting, when his plane had been caught in the midst of a pack of enemy’s planes. In one of his letters he had confesd to her that he often felt fear, and only a few days before this battle he had received her answer: “Of cour you fear…all brave men do. Next time you doubt yourlf, I want you to hear my voice reciting to you: ‘yeah, though I walked through the Valley of the Shadow of Death, I will hear no evil: for thou art with me.’…” He had remembered, and it had renewed his strength.
Now he was going to hear her real voice. Four minutes to six.
A girl pasd clo to him, and Lieutenant Blandford started. She was wearing a flower, but it was not the little red ro they had agreed upon. Besides, this girl was only about 18, and Hollis Meynell had told him she was 30. “What of it?” he had answered. “I’m 32.” He was 29.
His mind went back to that book he had read in the training camp. Of Human Bondage it was; and throughout the book were notes in a woman’s handwriting. He had never believed that a woman could e into a man’s heart so tenderly, so understandingly. Her name was on the book plate: Hollis Meynell. He had got hold a New York City telephone book and found her address. He had written; she had answered. Next day he had been shipped out, but they had gone on writing.
For 13 months she had faithfully replied. When his letters did not arrive, she wrote anyway, and now he believed that he loved her and that she loved him.
But she had refud all his pleas to nd him her photograph. She had explained:” If you’re feeling for me has any reality, what I look like won’t matter. Suppo I’m beautiful. I’d always been haunted by the feeling that you had been taking a chance on just that, and that kind of love would disgust me. Suppo I’m plain ( and you must admit that this is more likely), then I’d always fear that you were only going on writing becau you were lonely and had no one el. No, don’t ask for my picture. When you come to New York, you shall e me and then you shall make your decision.”
One minute to six…he put hard on a cigarette. Then Lieutenant Blandford’s heart leaped.
A young woman was coming towards him. Her figure was long and slim; her blond hair lay back in curls over her delicate ears. Her eyes were as blue as flowers, her lips and chin had a gentle firmness. In her pale-green suit, she was like springtime come alive.
He started toward her, forgetting to notice that she was wearing no ro, and as he moved, a small, provocative smile curved her lips.
“Going my way, soldier?” she murmured. He made one step clor to her. Then he saw Hollis Meynell.
She was standing almost directly behind the girl, a woman well past 40, her graying hair tucked under a worn hat. She was more than plump; her thick ankled feet were thrust into low-heeled shoes.
But she wore a red ro on her rumpled coat. The girl in the green suit was walking quickly. Blandford felt as though he were being split into two, so keen was his desire to follow the girl, yet so deep was his longing for the woman who spirit had truly companioned and upheld his own; and there she stood. He could e her pale, plump face was gentle and nsible; her grey eyes had a warm twinkle.
Lieutenant Blandford did not hesitate. His fingers gripped the worn copy of Human Bondage which was to identify him to her. This would not be love, but it would be something precious, a friendship that he had been and must ever be grateful…
He squared his shoulders, saluted, and held the book out toward the woman, although even well while he spoke he fell the bitterness of disappointment. “I’m John Blandford, and you---you are Miss Meynell. May---may I take you to dinner?”
The woman smiled. “I don’t know what this is all about, son,” she answered. “That young lady in the green suit, she begged me to wear this ro on my coat. And she said that if you ask me to go out with you, I should tell you that she’s waiting for you in that restraint across the street. She said it was some kind of test.”
Freda Bright says, "Only in opera do people die of love." Its true. You really cant love somebody to death. Ive known people to die from no love, but Ive never known anyone to be loved to death. We just cant love one another enough.
A heart-warming story tells of a woman who finally decided to ask her boss for a rai in salary. All day she felt nervous and apprehensive. Late in the afternoon she summoned the courage to approach her employer. To her delight, the boss agreed to a rai.
The woman arrived home that evening to a beautiful table t with their best dishes. Candles were softly glowing. Her husband had come home early and prepared a festive meal. She wondered if someone from the office had tipped him off, or... did he just somehow know that she would not get turned down?
She found him in the kitchen and told him the good news. They embraced and kisd, then sat down to the wonderful meal. Next to her plate the woman found a beautifully lettered note. It read, "Congratulations, darling! I knew youd get the rai! The things will tell you how much I love you."
Following the supper, her husband went into the kitchen to clean up. She noticed that a cond card had fallen from his pocket. Picking it off the floor, she read, "Dont worry about not getting the rai! You derve it anyway! The things will tell you how much I love you."
Someone has said that the measure of love is when you love without measure. What this man feels for his spou is total acceptance and love, whether she succeeds or fails. His love celebrates her victories and soothes her wounds. He stands with her, no matter what life throws in their direction.
Upon receiving the Nobel Peace Prize, Mother Teresa said, "What can you do to promote world peace? Go home and love your family." And love your friends. Love them without measure.
Once upon a time, there was an island where all the feelings lived: Happiness, Sadness, Knowledge, and all of the others, including Love. One day it was announced to the feelings that the island would sink, so all constructed boats and left. Except for Love.
Love was the only one who stayed. Love wanted to hold out until the last possible moment.
When the island had almost sunk, Love decided to ask for help.
Richness was passing by Love in a grand boat. Love said,"Richness, can you take me with you?"
Richness answered, "No, I cant. There is a lot of gold and silver in my boat. There is no place here for you."
Love decided to ask Vanity who was also passing by in a beautiful vesl. "Vanity, plea help me!"
"I cant help you, Love. You are all wet and might damage my boat," Vanity answered.
Sadness was clo by so Love asked, "Sadness, let me go with you."
"Oh . . . Love, I am so sad that I need to be by mylf!"
Happiness pasd by Love, too, but she was so happy that she did not even hear when Love called her.
Suddenly, there was a voice, "Come, Love, I will take you." It was an elder. So blesd and overjoyed, Love even forgot to ask the elder where they were going. When they arrived at dry land, the elder went her own way. Realizing how much was owed the elder, Love asked Knowledge, another elder, "Who Helped me?"
"It was Time," Knowledge answered.
"Time?" asked Love. "But why did Time help me?"
Knowledge smiled with deep wisdom and answered, "Becau only Time is capable of understanding how valuable Love is."
The Positive Meanings of Love
Wed like to share some of the positive meanings love has for us.
Love means that I know the person I love. Im aware of the many sides of the other person — not just the beautiful side but also the limitations, inconsistencies and faults. I have an awareness of the others feelings and thoughts, and I experience something of the core of that person. I can penetrate social masks and roles and e the other person on a deeper level.
Love means that I care about the welfare of the person I love. To the extent that it is genuine, my caring is not posssive, nor does it hold the other person back. On the contrary, my caring frees both of us. If I care about you, Im concerned about your growth, and I hope you will become all that you can become. Conquently, I dont put up obstacles to what you do that enhances you as a person, even though it may result in my discomfort at times.
Love means having respect for the dignity of the person I love. If I love you, I can e you as a parate person, with your own values and thoughts and feelings, and I do not insist that you surrender your identity to match an image of what I expect you to be for me. I can allow and encourage you to stand alone and to be who you are, and I avoid treating you as an object or using you primarily to satisfy my own needs.
Love means having a responsibility toward the person I love. If I love you, I respond to most of your major needs as a person. This responsibility does not include my doing for you what you are capable of doing for yourlf; nor does it mean that I run your life for you. It does mean acknowledging that what I am and what I do affects you, so that I am directly involved in your happiness and your suffering. A lover does have the capacity to hurt or ignore the loved one, and in this n we e that love involves an acceptance of some responsibility for the impact my way of being has on you.
Love means making a commitment to the person I love. This commitment does not mean surrendering our total lves to each other; nor does it imply that the relationship is necessarily permanent. It does involve a willingness to stay with each other in times of pain, struggle, and despair, as well as in times of calm and enjoyment.
Love means trusting the person who I love. If I love you, I trust that you will accept my caring and my love and that you wont the deliberately hurt me. I trust that you will find me attractive, and that you wont abandon me; I trust the mutual nature of our love. If we trust each other, we are willing to be open to each other and reveal our true lves.
Love can tolerate imperfection. In a love relationship there are times when I am bored, times when I may feel like giving up, times of real strain, and times I feel I cant move forward. Authentic love does not imply enduring happiness. I can stay during rough times, however, becau I can remember what we had together in the past, and I can picture what we will have together in our future if we care enough to face our problems and work them through. We agree with the idea that love is a spirit that changes life. Love is a way of life that is creative and that transforms. However, love is not rerved for a perfect world. Love is meant for our imperfect the world where things go wrong. Love is meant to be a spirit that the works in painful situations. Love is meant to bring meaning into life where nonn appears to rule. In other words, love comes into an imperfect world to make it possible to the live.
Love is open. If I love you, I encourage you to reach out and develop other relationships. Although our love for each other and our commitment to each other might prohibit certain actions on our parts, we are not totally and exclusively married to each other. It is a fal love that cements one person to another in such a way that he or she is not given room to grow.
Love is lfish. I can only love you if I genuinely love, value, appreciate, and respect mylf. If I am empty, then all I can give you is my emptiness. If I feel that Im complete and worthwhile in mylf, then Im able to give to you out of my fullness. One of the best ways for me to give you love is by fully enjoying mylf with you.
Love involves eing the potential within the person we love. In my love for another, I view her or him as the person she or he can become, while still accepting who and what the person is now. By taking people as they are, we make them wor, but by treating them as if they already were what they ought to be, we help make them better.
To sum it up, mature love is union under the condition of prerving ones individuality. In love, two beings become one and yet remain two.
