OnSept18th,1931,Japanestartedawell-preparedwarofaggressiontoChina,Japane

troopsoccupiedthreeprovincesofnortheastChinawithinfivemonths.

AkeymomentcameonJuly7th,anetroopswerecarryingouttrainingexercis

nearWanping,claredthatoneoftheir

soldierswasmissingandassumedthattheChinearmymighthavecapturedhimandso

demandedaarchforhiminWanpingtown,buttheChinesiderefudandsaidtheywould

thisasanexcu,theJapanearmyattackedtheChine

tletookplaceatabridgeleadingtothetown.

ThisiscalledLugouBridgeorMarcoPoloBridgeIncident,whichmarkedthebeginningofa

full-scaleinvasionofChinabytheJapane.

AfterBeijingfell,theyoccupiedShanghaionNovember12th,thenmarchedtowardNanjing,the

capitaloftheRepublicofChina,GeneralTangShengzhiledthenationalrevolutionaryarmyto

knownasthe“DefendingBattleofNanjing”.

OnDec13,1937,theJapanearmyoccupiedNanjingandduringthefollowingsixweeksthey

300,000innocentciviliansandunarmedChine

soldierswerebru

an20,000womenwererapedandmanyofthemwerethen

killed.

ThememorialhallstandsonthesiteofthemassacreatJiangdongGateduringtheNanjing

uiltin1985,andwaxpandedfirstfrom1994to1995,andthenfrom2005to

memorialhallwascompletedandopenedtothepubliconDecember13,2007,

namelytheasmblyground,theexhibitionhall,thesiteofthemassacreandthePeacePark.

killedintheNanjingMassacre.
