nearlyallphosphate,whichisaveryimportantfertilizerforfarming.Thecompany

beganminingthephosphate.

Aphosphatemineisnotaholeintheground;itisastripmine.Whenacompany

wants.Stripminingtotallydestroystheland.Gradually,thelovelyislandofNauru

startedtolooklikethemoon.

In1968,Naurubecameoneoftherichestcountriesintheworld.Everyyearthe

governmentreceivedmillionsandmillionsofdollarsforitsphosphate.

Unfortunately,theleadersinvestedthemoneyunwilyandlostmillionsof

dollars.Inaddition,theyudmillionsmoredollarsforpersonalexpens.Soon

peoplerealizedthattheyhadaterribleproblem﹣theirphosphatewasrunning

out.Ninetypercentoftheirislandwasdestroyedandtheyhadnothing.By2000,

Nauruwasfinanciallyruined.Expertssaythatitwouldtakeapproximately433,
