Gorman's stories have an amazing breadth of style and plot -- pure detection, private eye stories, and straight crime tales. The Judge Whitney stories are filled with the sights and sounds of small-town America around 1958. The Closing Circle is a detective story and a nsitive evocation of a girl coming of age. And in some stories, peculiarly nasty protagonists have the tables turned on them.
