作为在漫长的英语学习道路上摸爬滚打了大半辈子的人，我深深懂得学习与掌握英语的方法可谓多种多样、因人而异。有人用语法—翻译法掌握了英语语言；有人靠交际口语法习得英语语言；有人则通过背诵大量的英语篇章为手段走进了英语世界。凡此种种，不一而足。总之，成功的学习者们都会聪明而理智地以一种或多种适合自己的学习方法去获取英语知识。无论我们采用何种学习方法，都要熟悉英语语言的语音、语法、词汇、词组、句子、篇章等语言要素。但据我所知，真正掌握英语的人都非常注重在“词”这个层面上下苦功。可以毫不夸张地说，“词”是任何一种语言的灵魂与核心。换句话说，谁掌握了一种语言的词，谁就能驾驭这种语言。坦率地说，词语学习既是最容易又是最艰难的事。从小学生到中学生，从大学生到研究生乃至大学教授以及其他学者们，均掌握了数量相当的英语单词，从这个意义上来说，学习英语单词是极其容易的事情。但谈到从真正意义上吃透多少英语单词，可能就教授、学者这个英语高水平群体而论恐怕也是有限的，遑论那些正在学习英语的学生们了。下面的例子就能说明这个道理：几乎所有学过英语的人都知道home和family这两个单词的汉语对应意义是“家”，但可能有些人还不知道同样是“家”，home和family所隐含的意义却很不一样。例如：My home has moved to New York.与My family has moved to New York.这两句英语大致上可对应于汉语里的“我的家已经搬到纽约了。”这一意思。对于一个不求甚解而只注重表面对等的人来说，在他看来这两句意义基本是一样的。其实这两句的真实意义很不一样：My home has moved to New York.是指“住宅”搬到了纽约，而My family has moved to New York.则暗示“所有家庭成员——一大家子”移居纽约了。像Longman Dictionary of Contemporary English这样的权威词典对这两个词的基本意义均作了明白而清晰的解释：home(the hou,apartment,or place where you live),family(a group of people who are related to each other,especially a mother,a father,and their children)。可见，仅仅靠表面上的英语—汉语意义对等来学习掌握英语词汇是很不够的，有时甚至还会被引入“歧途”。经验告诉我，很多学习英语的学生（我自己做学生时也是如此）很喜欢依靠仅有〖3〗〖1〗英语—汉语表面意义对等的词典来学习单词，这是很容易学“歪”的。可以这么说，英语中像home和family这样需要仔细琢磨词义的语言现象是很普遍的。当然，处理这样的问题我们还是有办法的，最重要的是我们必须大量阅读英语原文材料，在具体语境中体察每一个词语的意义及其差别。另外，要善于勤查各种词典，尤其像Longman Dictionary of Contemporary English这样原版的英英权威词典以及相关的参考书。毫无疑问，每一位学习者都明白“勤能补拙”的道理，学习像英语这样的外语，尤其需要“勤”字当头，也就是说，我们务必要花大量的时间和精力去学好英语。另一方面，我们学习英语还要注重“巧”字，不能光低头拉车而不抬头看路，特别是一些“捷径”。在学习英语道路上的“捷径”是指可充分利用的英语教材和参考资料，这些材料可以让每一个英语学习者在省时省力的情况下，还能学得准确。令人欣喜的是，这里我可以为广大英语学习者介绍一条捷径。最近，青年教授钟书能博士领衔编写了一本《当代学生英语用法指南》，这一新作完全可以遂广大英语学习者所愿。通读全书，我感觉到编者们已把教学中积累了多年的知识与学习方法倾注到了著作之中。书中选择的词语既是极为常见的，又是容易用错的。编者们从词的文体意义、情感意义、评价意义、搭配意义以及语用等角度对同义词进行了透彻的考察分析；最为难得的是编者们还为每个词的具体应用提供了英语原文的语境，让读者们对词的使用一目了然，这点想必很是为读者着想的，我对此表示赞赏。当然，这仅仅是一本小册子，容量小，未必能满足读者的一切需求，即不可能把英语学习者可能遇到的所有困难都囊括其中。不过，通过这本小册子的学习，英语学习者想必会形成一种善于辨别词义的良好习惯，这或许就是编者们所寄寓的一番苦心吧。
