我们钦佩你们取得的成就,像大多数美国人一样,我们希望随着贵国经济的发展,你们将继续完善法制,加强个人的权利。去年和前年夏天,耶鲁特别荣幸地接待了来自贵国14所主要高校的校长和副校长,举办了为期10天安排紧凑的研讨班,探讨了世界上最知名学府的政策和实践。
我们的对话表明,在重要的价值观和国家政策问题上,我们有着很大的分歧,但是我们也有很多共识。最主要是,只有通过教育才能使人们获得创新和独立思考的能力,推动科学和物质进步,并展现丰富社会的人文和艺术的表现力。我们也同意拥有不同的传统准则和价值观的人们,可以通过交流切磋,加深了解。我们的经历与成千上万的中美科学家、学者和学生的经历一样,我们之间的互动可以成为两国间持久和平的基础。
耶鲁引以为荣的是我们同中国有着广泛的联系,文理学院学者以及几乎各个专业的教员都在与中方对口合作,从事80多个和教学项目。除了大学领导高级研讨班以外,我们还为贵国的环境官员、市长、国营企业的高级主管和政府部门的高级别领导培训项目,我们还与复旦大学和北京大学合作进行大型的科研项目,并与您的母校清华大学就文化和环境项目开展合作。我们的中国法律中心积极参与了由***主席和克林顿总统共同发起的“中美元首法制计划”,并与贵国的法学院、行政机构和全国人民代表大会保持紧密接触,协助推进中国的法制改革进程。
我们美国学生渴望了解中国,他们从课堂里学一年级中文课的注册学生在过去一年中增加了50%以上,开设的中国近代史每次总有300多名学生注册报名,他们也从交流中学****通过与600多名在耶鲁的中国学生和学者的交流,也让我们受益匪浅,也让我们从他们那里学到不少。
