Ifthereisonefundamentalissueonwhichmostarchaeologistscangenerallyagree,itistheimportanceofchronologyinstudyingthepast.Althoughoneofthemostimportantcontributionsthatarchaeologycanmakeisthestudyofculturesoverlongtimespans,controlofthetimedimensioniscrucialinalmostallkindsofarchaeologicalrearch.Instudyingthearchaeologicalrecord,thearchaeologistneedstodifferentiatethomaterialsthatarecontemporaryandthothatreflectthepassageoftime.Giventheimportanceofestablishingthetemporalrelationshipsofarchaeologicalremains,itisnotsurprisingthatuntiltheintroductionofdatingtechniquesfromthephysicalsciences(e.g.,chemistryandnuclearphysics),issuesofchronologydominatedarchaeology.Archaeologistscannowaccessawidevarietyoftechniquestoestimatetheageofarchaeologicalremains,andcannowturntheirattentiontoissuesotherthanchronology.
Thedatingmethodsudbyarchaeologistsvaryconsiderablyinprecisionandthenatureofthematerialactuallydated.Agedeterminationsforarchaeologicalmaterialsmaybedirectorindirect.Directdatesarederivedfromtheactualartifact,featureorecofacttodeterminetheageofthematerial.Indirectdatesarebadonmaterialassociatedwiththearchaeologicalitemofinterest.Forexample,ashinanancienthearthcanbedatedbytheradiocarbondatingmethod(discusdbelow)andothermaterial,suchaspottery,stonetools,andfragmentsofanimalboneassociatedwiththehearth,canthenbeindirectlyassignedthesameage.Thisassignment,however,assumesthatthereissufficientevidenceindicatingthatboththehearthandtheartifactsreflectthesamecontemporaneouvent,thusallowingtheextensionofthedirectdatetotheotherrelatedmaterial.
