Astudyhasfoundthatpeoplewhoappeartobeconstantlydistractedhavemore“workingmemory”,givingthemtheabilitytoholdalotofinformationintheirheadsandmanipulateitmentally.
Childrenatschoolneedthistypeofmemoryonadailybasisforavarietyoftasks,suchasfollowingteachers’instructionsorrememberingdictatedntences.
Duringthestudy,volunteerswereaskedtoperformoneoftwosimpletasksduringwhichrearcherscheckedtoaskiftheparticipants’mindswerewandering.
Attheend,participantsmeasuredtheirworkingmemorycapacitybytheirabilitytorememberariesoflettersintersperdwithsimplemathsquestions.
DanielLevinson,apsychologistattheUniversityofWisconsinMadisonintheUnitedStates,saidthatthowithhigherworkingmemorycapacityreported“moremindwanderingduringthesimpletasks”,buttheirperformancedidnotsuffer.
Theresults,publishedonlineinthejournalPsychologicalScience,appeartoconfirmpreviousrearchthatfoundworkingmemoryallowshumanstojugglemultiplethoughtssimultaneously.
DrJonathanSmallwood,oftheMaxPlanckInstituteforHumanCognitiveandBrainScienceinLeipzig,Germany,said:“Whatthisstudyemstosuggestisthat,whencircumstancesforthetaskaren’tverydifficult,peoplewhohaveadditionalworkingmemoryresourcesdeploythemtothinkaboutthingsotherthanwhatthey’redoing.”

Workingmemorycapacityisalsoassociatedwithgeneralmeasuresofintelligence,suchasreadingcomprehensionandIQscores,andalsooffersawindowintothewidespread,butnotwellunderstood,realmofinternallydriventhoughts.
DrSmallwoodadded:“Ourresultssuggestthesortsofplanningthatpeopledoquiteoftenindailylife—whentheyareonthebus,whentheyarecyclingtowork,whentheyareintheshower—areprobablysupportedbyworkingmemory.
“Theirbrainsaretryingtoallocateresourcestothemostpressingproblems.”
