Althoughtheinventionoftheairplanedidrevolutionalizetheworld'slongdistancetravelling,whathasreallychangedthewaypeoplelivewouldbethecar.Intermsoftheimpactonsociety,theautomobilewouldnotbereplacedbytheairplane,asifthehorhavingbeenreplacedbytheautomobile.Toexplaintheimportanceofthemotorizedvehiclesongroundtransportationoverthatoftheflyingvehicles,onehasonlytodecidewhichonewouldbemoredifficulttodowithout.

Nevertheless,itemvenhardertodowithouttheautomobile.Tobeginwith,mathematicsmatters.Thenumberofmotorizedvehiclesfarexceedsthatofflyingvehiclesbyhundredsofmillions,whichmayrvetoexplaintheoverridingeffectsofenginecartsonwheelovertheroutinelivesofthemostpeople.Oncetheautomobilebecameapracticalandreliablesourceoftransportationinthepastcentury,itchangedalmosteverythingworldwide.Thehorandcartbegantodisappeargraduallywhilemuchofthecountrywaspavedovertomakeroomforendlessribbonsofasphalt.Amongotherthings,theautomobilehasbroughtaboutobviouconomiceffects,makingitpossibletotruckingoodsthatwouldotherwibedifficulttoacquire.Morethantheairplane,theautomobilegivespeoplesuchadegreeofmobilityandpersonalfreedomasneverbeforeen.
