In2012,thecompanyachievedsteadygrowththankstoyourcontinuedtrustanddedication.Despiteintensifyingcompetition,werecordedhistoricsalesrevenueandoperatingprofitthatstrengthenedourleadershipintheglobalelectronicsindustry.Badonconsolidatedfinancialstatements,werealizedsalesrevenueofKRW201trillion,operatingprofitofKRW29trillionandnetincomeofKRW24trillion,doublethepreviousyear.Wealsomaintainedarobustfinancialstructure,witha49.1percentliabilityratioand79.5percentcapitaladequacyratio.
Expandingthemarketleadershipofcorebusiness
Lastyear,SamsungElectronicxpandeditsmarketleadershipincorebusiness,includingsmartphonesandTVs.Weachievedremarkableresultsinourmobilebusiness,rankingNo.1inbothsalesandmarketshareinsmartphonesandallmobilephones.IntheTVbusiness,weagainachievedNo.1marketshare,fortheventhyearinarow,alsoearningthehighestprofitabilityintheindustry.WefurtherstrengthenedthemarketpowerofourMemorybusiness,outpacingcompetitorswithourunmatchedtechnology,dominantcostsavingsandadvancedprocesstechnologydevelopment.Inourdevelopingbusiness,OLEDgreatlyimproveditsprofitability,ledbydifferentiatedcompetitiveness.TheSystemLSIbusinessalsoshowedoutstandinggrowthinthemobiledevicemarket,ledbytheAPandCISnsorgments.
In2013,wewillsharpenourmarketleadershipacrosscoreareasandacceleratedevelopingbusinesstomaintainourstrongperformance.Withournewlyreorganizedstructureofthreedivisions,wewillaggressivelyrespondtorapidlychangingbusinesnvironmentsaswesteernewtechnologyinitiatives,pioneernewmarketsandidentifybusinessopportunities.
Securingourcorecompetitivenessandbrandmomentum
Toreinforcecompetitiveness,SamsungElectronicsisfocusingonattractingoutstandingtalent.WeareconsistentlyrecruitingexpertsinsoftwareandR&D,andnurturingourpatentcapabilitiesbycollaboratingwithoutsiderearchinstitutesandpartners.Thatstrategyhaspaidoff.In2012,weregistered5,081patentsintheU.S.
Ourdifferentiatedcapabilitiesandtechnologyearnedworldwiderecognition,includingfourawardsfromtheEuropeanImagingandSoundAssociation2012(EISA),themostprestigiousintheregion’svideoandaudioindustry,and27innovationawards
atCES2013,theworld’slargestconsumerelectronicsshow.Wealsoadvancedhighprofileandconsistentglobalbrandmarketingbysponsoringarangeofinternationalsportvents,includingtheLondon2012SummerOlympics.Asaresultofsuchefforts,weattainedtheNo.9rankingonInterbrand’sBest100GlobalBrands2012list,withanestimatedbrandvalueofUSD32.9billion.
